The Four Fundamental User Roles
When created, each FiscalNote account is designated a specific role in the platform allowing for access (and when necessary, restricted access) to certain features and commands. The Default role will be 'User', but each organization can leverage the 4 Fundamental User Roles to customize your team structure for maximum efficiency: Systems Administrators, Users, Read-Only Users, and Make-Your-Own. Users
Odds are, you have been granted standard access with the User role. It is the most frequently assigned role in FiscalNote, and you generally have full access with the ability to use FiscalNote as you see fit. Click here to learn more about User and Read-Only roles and how they differ.

Read-Only Users
It's not common, but you may have been assigned a Read-Only License. Typically reserved for outside counsel or temporary hires, Read-Only user roles restrict the ability to perform certain functions in FiscalNote. Click here to learn more about Read-Only Users.

Make Your Own
The fourth Fundamental User Role, Make-Your-Own, grants Systems Administrators the ability to customize what you can and cannot do. If you don't feel comfortable with the out-of-the-box user roles and associated capabilities, you're not alone: complex teams often utilize Make-Your-Own roles to streamline functions within FiscalNote based on unique team structures and responsibilities. Click here to learn how the Make-Your-Own user role is created and how to best leverage it for your own team.

User Groups
Different from User Roles, User Groups can allow for separate project-based work, or determine how certain departments and sub-sets of your team perform their work in FiscalNote. Use them to allow certain teams to restrict access to sensitive Issues, share client based notes, and more. Click here to learn more about User Groups.

User Roles vs User Groups
Roles and Groups...you may be thinking: "that sounds like the same thing!" However, they are very different and each serve their own unique function to help aid your efforts. More specifically, Groups allow for small-group collaboration, while roles determine what each individual user can and cannot do.
