FiscalNote's "Similar Bills" identifies companion bills within a legislature, bills reintroduced year over year, and model legislation introduced across states. This data is available for state or federal legislation, as appropriate, by clicking over to the "Documents" tab on a bill page.
The "Similar Bills" pane relies on a comparison of the titles and descriptions (if available) for different pieces of legislation.FiscalNote utilizes a 70% text similarity threshold for inclusion in the "Similar Bills" pane in order to filter out legislation that is merely similar in subject matter or theme but not truly a model, reintroduced, or companion bill. If the titles and/or descriptions for a bill shares text similarity of 70% or greater with a given bill, that bill will be listed as similar to the given bill in one of the following four ways:
- Across Chambers (Current Session): Bills from either chamber of the same legislature during the current session.
- Within Chamber (Current Session): Bills from the same chamber of the same legislature during the current session.
- Across Chambers (All Sessions): Bills from either chamber of the same legislature during the current or previous sessions.
- All Legislatures (All Sessions): Bills from either chamber of any state legislature during the current or previous sessions.
